What's Next Generation Human Computer Interface?

The graphical user interface (GUI) is now firmly established as the preferred user interface for end users in most situations. Three-dimensional GUIs raise many issues of design, metaphor and usability.

With the proliferation of virtual environments in real-world applications effective interface design and usability testing for virtual environments becomes increasingly important. Since 3D interfaces are not based on a set of standardized widgets the tasks of user orientation, interface presentation and interaction feedback require special attention during the design of 3D environments. So far the interfaces have been developed with the use of keyboard and mouse movements and the use of human voice commands has not been widely practiced for communicating with the computer. Speech recognition and Speech Synthesis for communication between the user and the computer are two aspects which have been given special consideration in our project.

"Next Generation Human Computer Interface" is a suite, which encompasses the following modules:

1. 3D Desktop
2. 3D File System Visualizer
3. 3D RAM Visualizer
4. 3D Control Panel
5. Speech Recognition of user commands
6. Speech Synthesis of response from the computer.
